One of the most common issues we hear from coaching clients is that no matter how hard you try, your team falls short of meeting the goals and expectations you’ve set for them.

If this sounds familiar, you’re not alone, and you’re in the right place.

Robb Zbierski is here to share some invaluable tips and tricks to change the conversation and give you the keys to unlocking Team Member motivation.

A fundamental principle emphasized throughout the Train Your Brain For Success curriculum is that a truly motivating goal must be meaningful to the individual. Your team won’t be inspired by a goal they didn’t create, one that doesn’t impact their livelihood, success, or income. These goals are often perceived as detached from their personal aspirations.

So, what’s the solution? Robb suggests a shift in how you communicate and frame these goals. Instead of focusing solely on your agency’s objectives, start by having open conversations with your team members. Ask them about their personal aspirations. What are they chasing? What drives them to show up every day and give their best?

While you don’t need to delve into their personal lives, casual conversations can reveal that your team members have dreams and goals outside of the office. They might be saving for a new car, dreaming of home-ownership, planning a special family vacation, or simply trying to pay off a significant bill. These aspirations are what truly motivate them.

Once you’ve identified what’s important to each team member, shift the focus of your conversations. Ask questions like, “What did you do today to get closer to that Disney trip?” or “How can we work together to help you unlock the door to your new home?” By consistently linking their daily actions and achievements to their personal goals, you create a win-win situation.

This alignment between personal and professional goals can be a powerful catalyst for motivation.

Help them gain clarity on what is most meaningful to them. And then don’t be surprised if you discover that their individual aspirations far surpass the goals you would have set for them within the agency.
